As wise person once said, "If you don't know what your choices are, you have none!" If you can't make an "in person" class work for your schedule, a good *quality online childbirth education class can be a great solution to allow you to make informed choices and really prepare for your birth experience.

I emphasize "quality" due to the fact that many women opt for a free, hospital-based class. While there can be some good educators teaching hospital-based, one day classes, the reality is, they are hospital employees and are ultimately relaying what the hospital wants you to know. Many resemble "how-to-be-a-good-little-patient" classes.

Not exactly what you want when you expect your choices to be fairly presented.

A live childbirth education class series is often a better option for most couples but in our fast-paced world, sometimes those 6-12 weeks of after-work-classes just don't fit our lives!

Offer understanding of the process including the physiology and hormones of pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Build your confidence in your body's innate ability to birth.
*Should give you great nutrition guidelines and ideas to keep your pregnancy healthy and low risk.
Give great exercise ideas, supportive stretching positions and stamina building skills to help accomplish your goals.
Offer concrete birth skills practice such as beneficial positions, relaxation breathing, affirmations, imagery, etc.
Offer choices, examples and instruction on practicing coping techniques for labor like massage, water, music, etc.
Will help you and your honey communicate and work through common fears surrounding the process of birth and parenting.
Prepare your honey with ideas to physically and emotionally support you on that big day.
Taking time to learn and practice strengthens your bond with your partner. Birth becomes your team effort!
Provide information on potential medical interventions and how to navigate them with true informed consent.
Offer education on breastfeeding in the early days, how to deal with common challenges and when to consult a professional.

Like I mentioned, there are several flavors of live classes out there (depending on where you live). Bradley, Lamaze, Birthing from Within, Hypnobirth, Hypnobabies and the list goes on. If these are available in your area, and you find the one that fits your life, go for it! You will benefit from the group setting as well as the friendships that can start in that type of setting.
